Missing child found dead in Dayton; person of interest in police custody

Dayton police said a child believed to be missing 8-year-old Hershall Creachbaum was found dead Saturday in the city.

The police said in a Facebook post that a person of interest is in custody and the investigation into Hershall Creachbaum’s disappearance in under investigation.

Police said the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office was confirming Hershall Creachbaum’s identity.

A 38-year-old Dayton man was booked into the Montgomery Count Jail around 6:30 p.m. Saturday night who has been charged with murder, felonious assault, child endangering, tampering with evidence, obstructing justice and abuse of a corpse.

The Dayton Daily News does not name suspects in most cases until they have been formally charged in court.

No other details were released.

Hershall Creachbaum was reporting missing around 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Xenia Avenue.

Creachbaum had autism and was non-verbal, and was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt with cartoons and gray sweatpants.

Creachbaum used a wheelchair, but can walk short distances. His wheelchair was located, according to police.
